About the consultation

Reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS is one of the priority objectives of the international community. As part of its millennium development goals (MDGs), the United Nations aspires by 2015 to halt and begin to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS. The Lausanne movement, at its leadership meeting in Budapest last June, identified HIV/AIDS as one of the most significant challenges to world missions.

HIV-AIDS is the most dramatic occurrence of our times and as such presents a vital opportunity, and responsibility, to develop more effective Bible engagement praxis. This realization led the Forum to set forth in exploration as to how the Bible might be brought to engage with the HIV/AIDS situation. Several years of research and discovery led to the 2007 HIV/AIDS Consultation held in Nairobi, Kenya September 30 – October 4, 2007. It was a strategic opportunity for us to come together on this key topic.

The consultation helped us gain a broader understanding of Scripture engagement and discover what the implications are for us (alone and together) in our future activities.  While the context is HIV-AIDS, the value of the consultation transcends a particular focus area. What we learned and explored at this consultation are relevant both at the level of particular HIV-AIDS initiatives and beyond.
